About the Exhibition
This new series of small drawings, Psychomagical Landscapes and Other Drawings, bridges Marta Elise Johansen's training in architecture with her practice as an artist. Constructed line drawings meet freehand ink and mixed-media forms, creating compositions that are both precise and intuitive.
These meditative works trace imagined landscapes where lives, energies, and elements of the natural world intersect. Throughout the series, forms shift and transform, reflecting the fluid nature of these relationships.
Inspired by the architectural drawings of Mies van der Rohe, the films of Alejandro Jodorowsky, and the paintings of Hilma af Klint, the exhibition explores the space between structure and intuition, observation and imagination.
About the Artist
Marta Elise Johansen is an artist and designer based in Sausalito, California. Working primarily with ink on paper, her practice centers on hand drawing as both a meditative discipline and an exploration of abstraction, materiality, and nature.
Raised among artists connected to Black Mountain College, Johansen was deeply influenced by M.C. Richards and Paulus Berensohn, whose philosophies of craft and creative practice continue to inform her work. Formally trained at the University of Southern California School of Architecture, she has collaborated with leading architecture, interiors, hospitality, and design studios including Frederick Fisher and Partners, Nicole Hollis, Studio Collins Weir, Intelligentsia Coffee, The Meteor, Black Ink, and Broc Cellars. She has also taught graduate and undergraduate art and design studios at both the University of Southern California and California Polytechnic Institute, Pomona.
