Introducing Sierra Reading

One of the most rewarding aspects of what we do at Erica Tanov is having the privilege of working alongside many talented women, and creatively collaborating as much as possible. This season we are excited to introduce and give you a glimpse into the studio of Sierra Reading, Oakland-based textile artist and long-time friend and employee at Erica Tanov. You can check out the silk-indigo pieces she created for us this spring season in our stores now.

Originally from the small California farming community of Colusa County, Sierra went on to earn her B.F.A. in textiles from the California College of the Arts. Studying under masters like Sasha Duerr and Nathan Lynch, Sierra focused on natural dye processes and interactive art making within the textile discipline.

When she's not playing with colors and cloth, Sierra is the head fashion design instructor at the Youth Art Exchange- an art education non-profit based in the excelsior District of San Francisco that works with public high school students. She leads garment construction classes for students 14-17 years old every semester, and holds a fashion show for her students that documents the work they accomplished throughout the semester.

Sierra has exhibited her dye work at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, the Berkeley Art Museum, the California Fibershed, and many other commissions for local designers throughout the Bay Area.
